Learn to start and operate your own Home-based Child Care Center, or qualify as a ‘Responsible Adult’ to work in a variety of child care settings such as School Age Care, Family Drop-In Centers, Childminding, Occasional Child care and/or as support in Licensed Child Care facilities. This course provides comprehensive training, ensuring quality child care and the successful management of a Family Child Care Business. Topics include Child Care in BC, Child Development, Behaviour Guidance, Program Planning and Health Safety and Nutrition, along with the business practices of Family Child Care such as record keeping, family and community partnerships, and developing a parent package including policies and contractual agreements. This course offers a certificate of completion that is recognized by the Community Care Facilities Licensing as part of the Licensing process for Family Childcare as well as the 20-hour ‘Responsible Adult’ qualification.

This course is designed for students interested in opening their own family child care business or pursuing work in the child care field as a qualified ‘Responsible Adult’. This course meets the current provincial training requirements and incorporates new and up-to-date information regarding Child Care Licensing Regulations and Standards of Practice. Level 1 and Level 2 together provide comprehensive training, ensuring quality childcare and the successful management of a family child care business.

A certificate issued by Burnaby CCE will be granted following satisfactory completion of this course.

Course fee includes workbook.


PREREQUISITES

Students should meet all the following prerequisites before registering:

  • Students must be at least 19 years old
  • Fluency in written and spoken English – English language assessment is available at all information sessions
  • Students will not be accepted into level 2, unless they have successfully completed level 1

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

A certificate will be issued upon successful completion of the course.

To graduate, students must meet all the following requirements:

  • Attendance at all sessions
  • Successful completion of all course assignments

FUTURE EMPLOYMENT

After receiving a certificate from this course, many students have successfully opened their own family child care business!
Others have been able to find fulfilling jobs in a variety of licensed child care centers that require a certificate of ‘20 hr. Responsible Adult’.

Refund policy

Fee payments originally made by credit card are credited back to the same card; for expired or invalid credit cards, refunds are made by cheque. Fee payments originally made by cash or cheque are made by cheque. Please allow 3 weeks for processing.

Cancelled courses
When a course is cancelled by Burnaby CCE, a full refund will be issued.

Full time certificate / diploma programs
Requests for refunds received in writing (email) at least 1 week prior to classes starting will have $100 deducted from the course fee. Requests received less than a week prior to classes starting will have $200 deducted from the course fee. There will be no refunds once classes begin.

Part time certificate / diploma programs
Requests for refunds received in writing (email) at least 1 week prior to classes starting will have $25 deducted from the course fee. Refunds received less than a week prior to classes starring will have $50 deducted from the course fee. There will be no refunds once classes begin.

Career & Business Training/General Interest Courses
Requests for refunds received in writing (email) at least 2 days prior to the course starting will be refunded the course fee minus $20. Requests for refunds received less than 2 days prior to the course starting will be refunded the course fee minus $30. There will be no refunds once a course starts.
